Caspian Cobra
The Caspian cobra (Naja oxiana), also known as the Central Asian cobra or Oxus cobra, is a venomous snake. It is mainly found in Central Asia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the north-western mountainous regions of India.
In India, its first photographic and genetic confirmation from Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh was published in 2019.
This species has been recorded in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in the mountainous areas of Chamba district.
The Caspian cobra belongs to the family Elapidae, and its venom can produce primarily neurotoxic effects.
Some components of its venom may also seriously affect the heart and nervous system. Scientific studies have found the venom composition of Naja oxiana to be different from that of the Indian spectacled cobra (Naja naja).
The polyvalent anti-snake venom commonly used in India is primarily developed against the venom of the ‘Big Four’ snakes—spectacled cobra, common krait, Russell’s viper and saw-scaled viper.
Available Indian antivenoms have shown some cross-reactivity with Naja oxiana venom, but considerable variation has been observed in their effectiveness against different venom components and among antivenom manufacturers.
Therefore, the need for broader and region-specific antivenoms has been emphasised.
PRELIMS MCQ
Q. With reference to the Caspian cobra (Naja oxiana), consider the following statements:
1. Its photographic and genetic confirmation in India has been reported from Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.
2. It is a venomous snake belonging to the family Elapidae.
3. The polyvalent antivenom available in India has been developed specifically and exclusively against Caspian cobra venom.
4. Its distribution extends across Central Asia and some north-western parts of South Asia.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
(A) 1 and 2 only
(B) 1, 2 and 4 only
(C) 2 and 3 only
(D) 1, 2, 3 and 4
Answer: (B)
Explanation: Statements 1, 2 and 4 are correct. The Caspian cobra has been scientifically confirmed in India from Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh and is a venomous snake belonging to the family Elapidae. Its distribution extends across Central Asia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the north-western parts of India. Statement 3 is incorrect because the polyvalent antivenom commonly used in India is primarily developed against the ‘Big Four’ snakes and is not a specific antivenom for the Caspian cobra.
